We live in a time where youth is celebrated as a kind of currency. Smooth skin, strong bodies, and endless energy are lifted up as ideals, while aging is often portrayed as something to fight, hide, or “fix.” Even within the yoga world, this mindset can quietly seep in—creating a subtle pressure to perform, to keep up, to look a certain way.

But if we look a little deeper into yoga, it points us in a different direction.

Yoga is, in many ways, about gradually letting go of the body as we once knew it. The practices of yoga help us cultivate the ability to adapt to change—to shift our focus from outer form to inner awareness. From performance to presence.

Grace in aging is not passivity. It is an active and courageous practice: releasing comparison, letting go of ideals that no longer serve us, and instead honoring the wisdom that only a life fully lived can offer. It is about standing firmly in our own experience—even when it looks different than it used to.

Perhaps the postures become simpler—but the experience becomes richer.

Perhaps the movements become smaller—but the connection becomes deeper.

On this retreat, we create space to explore exactly this:

How can yoga support us through life’s transitions?

How can we meet aging in body, mind, and identity—not with resistance, but with dignity and warmth?

How can we practice in a way that nourishes us, rather than pushes us?

To age in yoga with grace is not to lose something—

it is to come home to something deeper.

Pernille Bønkan

Pernille has maintained a devoted yoga practice for more than 25 years. Her gateway into yoga was through dance — something she has been immersed in since childhood.

She has worked professionally as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer on the international dance scene since the age of 20. But her encounter with yoga felt like coming home — as if all the pieces finally fell into place. Connecting on a more holistic level awakened a new perspective and a deeper curiosity for life.

Over the past two decades, Pernille has primarily made a living by sharing and communicating the experiences of her spiritual journey. In 2006, she co-founded Puro Yoga, together with, among others, her teacher Alexander Medin. In 2009, she met her spiritual mentor Henrik Flørnes, who has also played a significant role in her process of integration and personal development.

Today, Puro Yoga is one of the country’s most established and respected yoga schools. In 2018, Pernille took over as the main teacher at Puro when Alexander moved to the mountains. And in 2023, she also assumed full responsibility for running the school, following the outstanding work of Astrid Riddervold, who had steered the ship for 16 years.

Pernille can still most often be found in the shala — where she feels most at home.

Pernille’s way of sharing yoga is holistic and authentic, shaped by deep integration, lived experience, and embodied understanding.

“The body is my instrument for opening up to life.”
