Ten practice sessions
Ten sessions of 2.5 hours each, spread over six days, with a systematic exploration of the principles of Tai Chi Grammar.

With Ann Danaiya Usher and Philippe Gagnon. A six-day tai chi workshop that brings together the principles of Tai Chi Grammar I and II.

Welcome to a six-day workshop with Ann Danaiya Usher at Nøsen in the Norwegian mountains. It is made especially for practitioners of tai chi in the tradition of Moy Lin Shin who have attended Tai Chi Grammar I and/or Tai Chi Grammar II.
As with Ann's earlier workshops, the programme will be very interactive and hands-on, with plenty of time and space to play, experiment and explore the surroundings.
In language, grammar is the structure underneath. Native speakers do not need to think about it, but when learning a new language it helps us understand why we say things the way we do. In the same way, Tai Chi Grammar is not the whole story of tai chi, but a framework, a guide and a tool for both long-time practitioners and people newer to the art. It helps students deepen their understanding and gain independence in their own practice. Above all, it gives concrete ways to connect all parts of the body to the spine, so that movement becomes more integrated and unified.
Tai Chi Grammar I, first taught at Nøsen in autumn 2024, is about the donyu: moving mainly through the spine while staying planted on two feet. Tai Chi Grammar II focuses on the toryu and the transfer of weight, back and forth and from one foot to the other while moving through the room. Tai Chi Grammar III will integrate the principles of the first two courses. Together we will 'grammatically analyse' movements in the set to become aware of the hows and whys in the choreography, an approach students can take home to their daily practice.
If you have not attended a Tai Chi Grammar course but would still like to come, contact Ann directly. If you can book early, please do, to secure a place and the type of room you want.

A resident of Norway since 1996, Ann Danaiya Usher began her practice of tai chi in the early 1980s in Montréal, Canada. She has taught classes and workshops in Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Norway.
Over the last decade, Ann has been investigating the internal structures of the movement, in search of a methodology to inform her own practice and to ground her teaching. This pursuit has resulted in the development of a set of principles – a “grammar” of tai chi.
Philippe Gagnon is Ann's teacher, who has supported and accompanied her in developing the Tai Chi Grammar teaching method. He joins Ann for Tai Chi Grammar III.
