Spring Weekend with Yin Yoga

With Astrid Riddervold. A spring weekend of yin yoga, breathing and meditation to wake up the body after winter.

Overview

After a long winter of cold, ice and darkness, nature slowly thaws and the light returns. It is time to let the body loose, it is spring!

From the water element and winter we move towards the wood element and spring. From still, dark and calm energy to energy that is rising, light and fresh.

In Chinese medicine and tradition, spring is the first of the five phases of change, the time for a new start. It is the element of youth and the future, a time of growth, development and flexibility, like the roots, branches and tough twigs of trees in spring.

We give a whole weekend to waking up this energy with breathing exercises and meditation, but above all with yin yoga. Yoga is about calming the mind as we spread and balance the energy in the body to improve physical and mental health. Dynamic yoga works mainly on the muscles and the mind. Yin yoga adds deeper contact with the fascia, the body's meridians and a meditative stillness.

Instead of building strength and raising your heart rate as in physical yang yoga, yin yoga asks you to relax and give in to gravity. Seated and lying poses held for several minutes release deep tension while they strengthen the organs, the mind and the body. We use bolsters, blocks and blankets for support and to help us into deeper rest. No experience needed, everyone can take part.

Astrid Riddervold

Astrid Riddervold

Astrid was the managing director, main owner and founder of Puro Yoga, Oslo's oldest Ashtanga shala, for 17 years. Today Pernille Bønkan owns and runs it, but Puro is still Astrid's workplace and "second home". There she practises and teaches regular classes and private lessons in yin and ashtanga yoga.

She also runs yin yoga teacher trainings and workshops once or twice a year at Puro or, as this year, at Nøsen Yoga og Fjellhotell. She also offers yoga retreats in Sweden and France.

Astrid has learned from and been inspired by many trips to Mysore in India, by other schools and countries, and by all the teachers who have visited Puro Yoga over the years. Other sources of inspiration are her great love of nature in all its forms, and the activities that go with it, and body therapy, from her background as a massage therapist.

With age, and after 25 years of practising yoga and almost as many teaching, she cares more and more about following nature and the seasons. Not working against the body and mind, but accepting and listening to change, both outside and inside.
