Living yoga

Yoga is life, and life is our great yoga practice. Teaching yoga starts with understanding what yoga is, building a basic grasp of it, and then sharing it honestly. Modern yoga focuses a lot on form and image, but living yoga touches our lives and our foundations, and wakes a greater presence and clarity. It helps us see the world, and our own mind, in a new way, and find more clarity and strength in everyday life.

Becoming a yoga teacher is like any other profession: the deeper you go into what you do, the surer you become and the better you can serve others. This year gives you a better overview of what yoga is. You go deep into practice, philosophy and teaching, and into how to talk about yoga in an honest and clear way.

At its root yoga is about presence. It takes a lot of practice and repetition to feel mastery, and these new routines can bring new clarity and insight. Yoga is also about letting go, and about learning to see the patterns of the mind and how they colour us. A daily practice is important for this, and the training puts a lot of weight on how to make more time for yoga in everyday life.

What you learn for yourself

  • A solid personal practice that strengthens body and mind
  • Breathing techniques that cleanse body and mind and give more energy, wellbeing and insight
  • Classical meditation that sharpens concentration
  • Classical mantra and japa that centre the mind and give focus
  • A basic introduction to yoga philosophy and the classical texts
  • Basic anatomy
  • An overview of how yoga has developed over the last 150 years
  • To analyse texts and see connections and new perspectives
  • To write essays, debate and give talks on different sides of yoga
  • To relax in what you do

Who the training is for

Everyone who wants to go deeper into yoga. People who have taken the training before include:

  • Those who want a career as a yoga teacher, full time or part time
  • Those who want to go deeper into yoga and give everyday life new challenges
  • Professional athletes who use yoga in their sport
  • Professional artists looking for a deeper nerve in their expression
  • People in ordinary jobs looking for more energy and meaning
  • Academics curious about what yoga is
  • Those who want to write about yoga and get a clearer structure
  • Former addicts making a comeback in life
  • Former prisoners who want to use their freedom as well as they can
  • Retired people with plenty of time

What we expect

Backgrounds vary widely and every year is different. Some are very serious, others take the course more for fun, and the group always finds a lively dynamic. You get out of it what you put in.

It helps if you have practised yoga for a few years, so you know what you are starting. The training expects you to spend time on yoga to go deeper. It makes no demands, but encourages discipline, a personal practice, self-study and giving of yourself. You write four essays during the year, of at most 2 000 words each. You give one talk to a study group and one to the whole class, and you take an exam in all the subjects you have studied.

After the training you can

  • Lead yoga classes in a clear way
  • Lead the Ashtanga Primary Series with the count, correct pronunciation and an understanding of the poses
  • Lead a Mysore class
  • Lead a soft yoga, yin yoga or relaxation class
  • Teach in a structured, clear way
  • Give a talk on the basic texts of yoga
  • Explain basic anatomy
  • Explain the principles of karma yoga, bhakti yoga and jnana yoga
  • Understand Ashtanga yoga, soft yoga and yoga philosophy
  • Understand the life work of Sri T. Krishnamacharya and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
