Chanting, the language of the gods

7 March 2025 · In Norwegian

Karina Kibsgård

In this episode of Yoga for livet we invite the listeners to chant with us.

"Song is something very special in human expression, and in most cultures people sing in grief or in celebration," says yoga teacher Karina Eline Kibsgård. "As children, many are told they cannot sing and so they dare not. Then they come to a yoga class with chanting and find it wonderful."

But why sing in Sanskrit, which most people do not understand?

"Sanskrit is one of the world's oldest written languages. Some call it the mother of all languages, and my teachers say it is the language of the gods. Even if you do not understand the meaning, there is something in the vibration of the language. We are vibrating beings, all energy is vibration, so it does something to us. You cannot sing without breathing, and our whole nervous system is affected when we sing and chant."

Host: Birgitte Gjestvang. Sound and music: Thomas Prado Lamo Lokøen.
