Nature experiences

White winter at Nøsen

Every morning I look towards the mountains, and every morning it feels as if I lose my breath, or as if my heart melts. It is always the same mountains and the same view, but I never tire of it. Nor can I find words beautiful enough to describe it. Imagine waking from savasana after an intense yoga session and looking out at the wonderful mountains catching the light of the rising sun, or perhaps hiding mysteriously in a veil of mist. It touches me in such a basic way. It feels as if I live a little extra, or that I simply am.

The nature around us has something to offer everyone, whatever the season. It tempts us to discover, to walk, to get lost and to find the way home. You can spend hours crossing ridges, discovering stones, crystals and caves. Or you can take a short walk down to the lake, sit by the water and watch what happens around you. Every season has endless things to offer; it is only up to you to choose.

In the winter months Nøsen becomes a snow-clad wonderland, a kind of hub for cross-country trails that connect us with Vaset, Gravset and Golsfjellet around us. Hot chocolate in the thermos, an orange and a Kvikk Lunsj in the rucksack, and here I am in the middle of the Norwegian postcard dream.

I am easily excited when it comes to powder snow. Then I jump out of savasana in no time, pack what I need, including an avalanche shovel and extra snacks, and rush out of the door, ready to sweat a little extra in pursuit of the white paradise on top of a new summit. Because it is balm for the soul, that quiet whisper of skis gliding over fresh powder.

When the snow melts and the days grow longer, when there is warmth in the air with new smells and new sounds, we are charged with a different energy. Ready for new discoveries. The same old place. Completely new adventures!

We feel rich in a luxury that money cannot buy. We wander down to the water, undress and let the water from melted ice and snow touch our skin. We lie in the grass and, with friends and colleagues, dream of new places and new adventures. But wherever we are, in the mountains, in the city or by the sea, the yoga practice is the same for all of us. It teaches us to appreciate what we have around us: the small moments in life.
