Founder: R. Alexander Medin
In 2015, Alexander took over what was then known as “Nøsen Fjellstue”, and started to transform it into Nøsen Yoga Mountain Retreat. The building was, at the time, in ruins. Today, the lodge can host up to 100 guests, and combines a distinct mountain feel and Norwegian touch, with a Yogic style and value-set.
Alexander has been teaching Yoga around the world for over 20 years. In 2002, he became certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from Mysore, India. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) developed the style of Vinyasa Yoga known as Ashtanga. Only 35 people worldwide have obtained the certification as Ashtanga teachers by Pattabhi Jois, Alexander being one of them.
With a Master’s degree in Sanskrit and Indian religions and spending many years studying in India, he regularly writes about Yoga and many of his articles have been published in leading, international journals about Yoga. He translated the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita to Norwegian.
Running the foundation “Yoga for Life”, he has launched and continues running projects, such as “Gangster Yoga” and “Back in the ring”, helping people who have “fallen out” of society and giving them the opportunity to build themselves up again, through a solid Yoga practice, heightened sense of responsibility and social work.
Together with Alexander, the daily managers of Nøsen Yoga Retreat & Fjellhotell all have one thing in common: Yoga as a lifestyle and study.
Eva is our team leader and manages the place when Alexander is not around. Aside of that and teaching yoga, she studies International Environmental Studies and tries to enhance more sustainable options for running this place. You can find her together with her dog Raja shadowing her on every step.
Madhu is the main Chef of the house. His knowledge is deeply rooted in the Indian kitchen, living and cooking in several temples and Ashrams for almost 30 years. Madu makes sure to give you nutritious and well-tasting vegetarian meals according to season and needs.
Raquel is the guide and mentor for the volunteers coming here. With a background in social studies and community development, she makes sure everyone is getting the best out of their experience here, teaching the volunteers everything from making chai masala tea to introduce them to Ashtanga primary series.
Last but not least, the volunteers are the reason Nøsen exists today. Nøsen is created by people with passion and interest in practicing selfless work for a greater good (karma yoga) and enjoy life and nature with people from around the world.
